Why is music forbidden in Islam?

Some moderate Muslims, including atheists, can be heard saying that why music is prohibited in Islam! Where is the problem of listening to music? This article highlights the harmful aspects of singing, references to prohibition of singing in Islam and why singing is forbidden.

Singing is forbidden in Al-Qur'an

● Almighty Allah says,

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتَّخِذهَا هُزُوًا ۚ اُولئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ

There is a class of people who blindly collect and mock people with falsehoods in order to mislead them from the path of Allah. For them there is a humiliating punishment. [1]

Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RA) said, "In this verse 'indecent talk ( لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ ) refers to singing and playing and other evils. [2] Thus Jabir, Ikrimah, Sa'id Ibn Zubair, Mujahid, Maqhool, Amr Ibn Shuaib and Ali This same interpretation is narrated from Ibnu Nadima (RA). The famous Tabee Hasan Basri (RA) said, "This verse was revealed about music and musical instruments. [3] Abdur Rahman Sa'di (RA) explained the mentioned words. Includes all obscene acts, idle talk, backbiting, backbiting, abuse, lying, blasphemy, blasphemy, fornication, illegal sports, music and all kinds of musical instruments. [4]

Ibnul Qayyim (RA) said, it is known and clearly understood from the interpretation of the Companions and the Tabiyids, that in this verse, music, playing and musical instruments are meant as 'informal speech' . Abus Sahaba (RA) said, 'I asked Ibn Mas'ud (RA) about this verse. He said, "By Allah, only singing is meant by this." He repeated this three times. [5] Allah says in Surah Luqman, for them is a humiliating punishment. In other words, there is a very severe punishment for those who listen to music.

Music is the tune of Satan

● Almighty Allah says,

قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَمَنْ تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ فَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ جَزَاؤُكُمْ جَزَاءً مَوْفُورًا وَاسْتَفْزِزْ مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ مِنْهُمْ بِصَوْتِكَ وَأَجْلِبْ عَلَيْهِمْ بِخَيْلِكَ وَرَجِلِكَ وَشَارِكْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَوْلَادِ وَعِدْهُمْ ۚ وَمَا يَعِدُهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا

Allah says (to Satan): Well, you go, Hell will be the full recompense of those who follow you, including you. You confuse everyone you can with your voice. Attack them with cavalry and infantry. Become a partner in wealth and children. And trap them in the web of promises. And Satan's promises are nothing but deception. [6]

Ibn al-Qayyim (RA) said, 'Those who disobey Allah and use musical instruments, such as flutes, tambourines of forbidden species, drums and tablas, these are the voices of Satan. [7]

● Almighty Allah also says,

أَفَمِنْ هَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ. وَتَضْحَكُونَ. وَأَنْتُمْ سَامِدُونَ

Are you wondering about this? And do not laugh-cry? You are indulging in pranks! [8]

Ibn Qasir (RA) said in the Tafseer of this verse, "The father of Sufyan Sawri (RA) narrated from Ibn Abbas (RA) that the word 'joke' ( سَامِدُونَ ) used in the verse (number 61 of Surah Najm) By means of singing. It is a Yemeni word. Like 'Ismid Lana ( اِسْمِدْ لَنَا ) - means, sing for us." Ikrima (RA) narrated the same. [9] According to the Qur'an, singing is clearly forbidden. Allah Ta'ala has prohibited singing and playing. Those who listen to music will suffer severe punishment for it.

Singing and playing hadith is forbidden

On the authority of Abdur Rahman Ibn Ghanam Ash'ari (RA): He said, Abu Amir or Abu Malik Ash'ari narrated to me. By God! He never lied to me. He heard the Prophet (may peace be upon him) say: There will surely arise among my ummah some groups who will consider adultery, silk cloth, wine and musical instruments lawful. [10]

This hadith highlights the prohibition of music from two perspectives:

The Prophet (PBUH) said, they will consider it halal. That is, it is haram, they will consider it halal. Therefore, it is proved that every thing mentioned through this hadith (fornication, adultery, silk cloth, alcohol and musical instruments) is haram.
The Prophet (PBUH) mentioned musical instruments together with those things which are definitely and clearly forbidden. For example, fornication and alcohol. If singing and playing musical instruments were not haram, he would not have mentioned it along with other haram things. [11]

This one hadith is enough to make singing and playing haram. So it is proven by Quran-Hadith that singing is forbidden.

Opinions of the four madhhabs and other imams regarding music

Hanafi School.

Imam Ibnul Qayyim (RA) said, Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) is the strictest madhhab regarding musical instruments. The students of Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) clearly declared musical instruments haram and declared those who listen to music as fasiq and their testimony is inadmissible. Many have even said that listening to music is fasiq and enjoying it is kufr. Although they have presented Mursal hadith in support of this statement. [12] They also said, if you hear music while passing by, you should try not to listen.Imam Abu Yusuf (RA) said, if the sound of music can be heard from a house, there is no need to seek permission to enter it. Because commanding good deeds and forbidding evil deeds is obligatory. In this case, people will not be able to follow this obligatory rule of commanding good deeds and prohibiting evil deeds. If someone continued to play music, the ruler could arrest him or even flog him. [13]

Maliki madhhab.

Imam Malik (RA) was asked about those who play drums and bassin. The question was asked, whether they can be enjoyed while passing by? He said, those Majlis must be removed. They have to leave. But if one is forced to sit there for some very urgent reason and is unable to get up from there, it is a different matter. And if you hear the sound of musical instruments on the way, you should move forward or backward quickly. [14] He said, singing is the work of the wicked. [15] Ibn Abd al-Barr (RA) said that among the things which the scholars agreed upon to be forbidden were musical instruments and all kinds of useless work. [16]

Shafi'i Madhhab.

The students of Imam Shafi'i (RA) and those who had real knowledge among the followers of his Madhhab clearly declared singing and musical instruments haram. Imam Shafi'i has refuted those who consider singing as halal. A person who listens to too much music is really stupid. His testimony is not admissible. [17]

Hanbali Madhhab.

Abdullah, the son of Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (RA) asked his father Imam Ahmad about music. Imam Ahmad replied, it creates hypocrisy in the heart; I dislike it. He then referred to the saying of Imam Malik (RA) and said that the only deed of the wicked is to listen to music. [18] Ibn Qudama (RA) is one of the leading Imams of the Hanbali Madhhab. He said that musical instruments made of wire, horns, flutes, drums and tablas etc. are Haram. Those who hear these, their testimony is rejected. [19] Then he said, "When attending a marriage invitation, if you see forbidden things like musical instruments and alcohol and have the ability to stop them, then do so. Otherwise, reject the invitation and leave. " [20] Shaykhul Islam Imam Ibnu Taymiyyah (RA) and the Imams of the four Madhhabs clearly stated that all musical instruments are Haram. For, the Sahih Hadith mentions, "A group of those who deem musical instruments halal will be transformed into monkeys-pigs. [21] He seriously notes that none of the followers of the four Imams disagreed on this. [22] Imam Ibn Taymiyyah (Rah: ) also said, “Music is the wine of the heart. Like alcohol, it also intoxicates the heart. [23] Imam Tabari (RA) said, the scholars of all places have agreed that singing is disliked and forbidden. Referring to the statement of Abul Farz, he said, from our Madhhab Kaffal (RA) said, "The testimony of those who participate in or listen to singing and dancing is not acceptable". Because they are not allowed. So I will say, when it is proved that these works are haram, then accepting wages in exchange for these works will also be haram. [24] Qasim ibn Muhammad (RA) said, "Singing and playing is wrong and abrogated". And the place of falsehood is hell. [25] The eminent Tabayi Hasan Basri (RA) also declared singing and playing haram. [26] Imam Taymiyyah (RA) said, according to most scholars, it is permissible to destroy musical instruments. This is the opinion of the top two scholars of Imam Malik's Madhhab and Hanbali Madhhab. He also said that it is not permissible to prepare musical instruments. [27] Imam Abi Shaiba (RA) narrates, "A person broke another's musical instrument. The matter came before the Kazi. The Kazi ruled that the owner of the musical instrument would not receive any compensation, as it is a Haram instrument, which has no value. [ 27] 28] Bahá'í (Rah:) issued a fatwa declaring all musical instruments haram. Selling musical instruments without breaking them is also forbidden. They cannot be used in music, but they can be broken up and sold for wooden or metal parts. [29] People forget Allah Ta'ala due to the intoxication of this music. The more interest a person has in this music, the more he moves away from religion. He can no longer feel Islam with his heart. Listening to recitation of Quran is not fun. At one time the fear of God completely departs from a heart plagued by nifa. The last bit of faith is lost. So avoid these while you have time.

Why is singing and playing haram or prohibited?

Everything that is harmful is forbidden in Islam, be it music or anything else. Due to which some aspects of singing and playing haram in Islam are highlighted:

Singing removes all fear of Allah from the heart.
Music drives people towards shirk.
Music encourages people to engage in blasphemous activities.
Music makes people stupid.
Music makes people angry.
It is the devil's work to lead people astray by listening to music.
Singing and playing sows the seeds of other kufr and haram acts in the heart.
Music reduces people's memory.
The feeling of music makes people forget everything. Takes you to another world.
A person gets lost in the world of imagination with what he hears in music.
Music playing pornographic scenes encourages people to imagine pornographic scenes.
The singing and playing of obscene language encourages people to abuse and use evil.
Violent music spreads violence among people.
Music takes people away from religion and Islam.
Music wastes people's time.
Music is one of Satan's tools.
Music diverts people from remembering the Hereafter.
Music is harmful to people. Music has terrible side effects.
Music creates terrible emotions in people's hearts.

Music is very harmful to people

Criminal and extremist songs.

A study found that people become aggressive after listening to violent music. Read details from there. In various wars extremist and aggressive songs are played to encourage the opposing enemy to become violent and aggressive. Because the kind of music you listen to will affect your emotions. An experiment showed how music can encourage people to commit crimes. Whenever you listen to a bad or criminal song, you will feel the same way. Music will inspire you to commit those crimes. You will get lost in the fantasy world of the criminal lyrics of that song. Criminal songs will attract you to crime. Radical music will make you radical. You will easily get angry very quickly about anything. [30]

Porn nude songs.

Obscene music will increase your sexual arousal and lead you to adultery and rape. At present, the spread of obscene music has spread widely in every country. Rape and adultery are increasing. Read this document focusing on the impact of sexually aggressive music content on partners' thoughts, emotions, and behavior toward the same or opposite sex . The bad effects of listening to obscene music are very high. Every time you listen to porn, you will think about porn in your fantasy world. Obscene music is a great threat to society. Nudity songs are enough to make a civilized society uncivilized.

Loss of education.

Music plays a great harm in a person's studies. I don't think anything should be written about the loss of music in studies.

emotions

Music enhances emotions in people. Takes people to the world of fantasy. As a result people keep thinking about it. Violent music increases violence in people. In a word, music leads people astray.

CNN reports on music

CNN News has written a report on music. There are clearly written studies on music that research institutes saycan encourage aggressive thinking or crime . [31]

After reading the CNN report , it will not be wrong to say that music is a great threat to the people of the society. Alhamdulillah 1400 years ago, Islam prohibited this music.

An experiment published in May in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that violent lyrics or lyrics can lead to negative emotions and thoughts leading to aggression. (Vol. 84, No. 5). [32]

Suicide of music singers

Whether the readers know or not, every year numerous Music Singers commit suicide due to depression. This list is very long. As I said earlier, music will drive you crazy. Below is a list of some famous singers who committed suicide.

I mentioned the names of 21 people. All of them were singers. All committed suicide. Many music singers commit suicide every year. But do a little research on why you commit suicide and you will get the answer. There are many more documents about music. If you mention it, the text will become big, so I am not doing it. Finally, I want to say that stay away from music. Atheists are the biggest threat to society. They want to make all immoral acts halal. So they are engaged in anti-Islamic activities with music as well. Music and music will take you to Dhabmbsa. So I would tell the readers to stay away from them. Music makes a man radical. Once caught in the emotional web of music and playing, it is very difficult to get out of it. A Muslim can never waste his time listening to music. So stay away from harmful things like music.
